Bench Staff Certifications

There's a lot to handle when a new season starts; paperwork, rosters, budgets. It can feel like a lot at once, especially your first year. Below is a good starting point to help you get going.

Qualifications
Every role on the bench - head coach, assistant coach, trainer, manager - has specific certification and screening requirements. Hockey Eastern Ontario keeps the full, current list here: Bench Staff Certification & Qualification Requirements

The Vulnerable Sector Check is a multi-step process start early:

  • Step 1: Get the formal letter here and bring it to the Ottawa Police website to request your VSC. This can take up to 8 weeks to process, so start as soon as possible. Watch for the completed VSC by email, check your junk/spam folder, and note it expires quickly. HEO can't recover an expired document, so if that happens you'll need to restart the request.
  • Step 2: Once you have your VSC, submit it through the online submission portal along with your online declaration. This applies if your VSC (in HCR) is three years old or older, or if you're a new volunteer - select HEO as your Ontario member on the first question.

Team Fundraising

Teams are encouraged to organize their own fundraising events. If your event is held outside the rink, HEO must be notified in advance for insurance purposes.
